Drone Training for Teachers

Oregon State University, Oregon Department of Aviation, and Oregon Department of Education are partnering to offer a three-day training on using unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in the classroom. This training is designed for educators who are currently using drones or who are interested in learning more about how to incorporate drones into the classroom.

The drone training for educators will be held on-site at Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR. Learn from experts in the industry, including Oregon State faculty, on the current best practices and cutting edge uses in the field of drones.

STEM Training in Education

With sessions designed to give teachers applicable curriculum and skills, a tour of the Oregon State facilities, and access to state of the art technology this three-day workshop is designed to give participants actionable items with direct relation to their classroom activity.

Instructors

Kevin Siverston

Kevin Siverston is an adjunct professor of unmanned aviation at Central Oregon Community College in Bend, Oregon. For the past ten years, Kevin has been immersed in the UAS industry, from convoy over watch and security flights to teaching students to operate quad copters safely. Kevin has developed a passion for this emerging field, most recently developing students’ skill sets in the areas of complex aerial operation, safety and regulation. He utilizes advanced teaching techniques, assessments and feedback to accelerate learning. Kevin’s teaching skills rapidly build rapport, create a safety mindset, and support mastery of the knowledge, skills, and decision making of piloting.

Kevin earned a Master’s Degree in education from Western Oregon University and has built unique student training curriculum for Central Oregon Community College’s UAS degree program. His abilities to build curriculum and train students in the new field of drone piloting has been hailed and emulated in academia and business. Before teaching at COCC, Kevin was a Scaneagle pilot, Scaneagle maintainer, fleet maintenance chief and field trainer for Insitu, Inc. out of Bingen, Washington. He deployed seven times completing assignments to Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait and the southern Philippines. He served nine years in the United States Air Force and Oregon Air National Guard. He understands and teaches pilots how to coordinate with multiple air agencies, troops on the ground and other aircraft in the air in a confined space to accomplish the mission successfully. When it comes to saving lives, increasing the security of our soldiers, and using unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to help our society become efficient and effective, Kevin Sivertson has been there.

Victor Villegas

Victor Villegas is Technology & Media Support Coordinator for Oregon State University Extension. He provides tech and media support and training to OSU Extension faculty and staff across Oregon. He also does K-12 STEM/STEAM outreach education, using drones to teach youth STEM/STEAM concepts and spark interest in STEM/STEAM education and careers. Victor has had a lifelong interest in aviation and originally studied Aeronautics and learned how to fly manned aircraft while attending college before changing course and obtaining a degree in Graphics Technology. Though he didn’t pursue a career in aviation, he keeps his love of flying going as a hobby, flying R/C airplanes, helicopters and drones. Victor’s biggest claim to drone fame, however, is through his online alter ego DroneSinger, the “Weird Al” of drones – World’s #1 creator of parody songs about drones. He creates songs about drones to bring attention to drone issues and culture, while encouraging safe and responsible flying. He has leveraged this fame to collaborate with the OSU Research Office, Oregon Department of Education, Oregon Department of Aviation and drone industry partners to provide public drone education, such as his K-12 efforts and this OSU “Drones in Education” workshop, which he coordinates. Victor is part of the eXtension UAS in Agriculture Learning Network leadership team, a USDA/NIFA funded national project and currently runs the UAS in Ag LN Facebook page, sharing information and news about drones in agricultural research, education and commercial applications.

Dr. Chuck Getter

Chuck Getter is the CTE Administrator and High School Career & Technical Educator at Career Tech High School in Lincoln City, Oregon where he runs the Coastal Drone Academy, a CTE program for high school students. He is both a FAA certified manned pilot and Remote (drone) pilot, with graduate level experience in education and marine studies from Oregon State University and University of Miami. Dr. Getter is currently completing graduate research and coursework in science education, with a focus on curriculum development, using drones to teach K-12 and community college students to learn Next Generation Science Standards, specifically Ocean Literacy as established by the National Marine Educators Association. Chuck will be teaching drone-based Mapping/GIS during our workshop. Some of his FAA Part 107 certified high school students will also be helping out with workshop instruction.
