3RD GRADE OREGON GROWN CURRICULUM

Learning Objectives

By the end of the curriculum your students will be able to:

  • Understand concept of agricultural commodities to their many by-products and shows how even “waste” materials can be made into something useful. 

  • Describe what a plant needs to grow

  • Identify where and how food is grown in Klamath County/Oregon

  • Identify Oregon grown foods and their nutrition benefits. 

 Each lesson page contains: 

  • Main lesson video ranging 30 minutes in length. This is the whole lesson from start to finish. 
  • Mini lesson videos ranging from two to fifteen minutes in length. These videos break the lesson up into smaller sections to allow the teacher more flexibility.
  • Supporting materials- printable student handouts, and activity pages.
  • Ability to order an activity kit (Klamath County Residents Only) for each lesson from Oregon State University Extension Office minimum of 1 week prior to lesson date. The lesson kits provides student materials needed to complete the activity in the lesson video and printed student handouts. 
  • Lesson extension - Additional educational video and/or activity page to compliment the main lesson.  
  • Post- Assessment - Simple 2 - 3 multiple choice questions to gauge the students understanding of key message.  This is how OSU Extension will collect data for our lessons. Please ensure your student completes the exit ticket after each lesson.

 

Lesson: From the World To You 

Grade Level:

Key Message: Students understand the products we use everyday start as a natural resource or and agricultural product

State Standards Met:  NGSS 3-LS1; SS 3.10; HE 1.3.3, 2.3.1; RI 3.4; SL 3.3; W 3.8; Essential Skills 4, 9

Lesson: Top to Bottom Fruits and Vegetables

Grade Level: 3

Key Message: Students learn about all parts of the plant, about the small fraction of the planets available for growing food, and way important farmland can be protected. 

State Standards Met:  NGSS 3-LS1, 3LS4; HE 1.3.3; RI 3.2, 3.4; RL 3.2, 3.7; Math NF.3.1, MP.2; W 3.2; Essential Skills 3, 4

 

Lesson: Discover Different Ways Plants Can Grow 

Grade Level: 3

Key Message: Students will understand vegetative propagation and regeneration and the importance of plants ability to regrow lost or damage parts. This lesson will also expose students to the potato- a prominent crop grown in our area. 

State Standards Met:  NGSS 3-LS1-1, 3-5-ETS1-1; SS 3.10; HE 1.3.3; RI 3.2; Essential skills 2, 4, 5, 9 

Lesson: Whole-Y Grains

Grade Level: 3

Key Message: Students will be able to identify the difference between whole grains and refined grains and investigate the process of milling wheat. This lesson will also expose students to grain growing in our area. 

State Standards Met:  NGSS 3-LS1-1.B; SS 3.10; HE 1.3.3; RI 3.2; Essential skills 2, 4, 5, 9




Lesson: Sun, Cow, Milk

Grade Level: 3

Key Message: Students will discover how the process of milk involves energy transfer from the sun to dairy cows and, finally to the consumer. And how when we eat products made from milk; we receive energy that originally came from the sun. It will also give students knowledge that milk is a larger commodity of our basin. 

State Standards Met:  NGSS 3-5-ETS1-1; SS 3.10; RI 3.2, 3.7; Essential skills 4, 9

Lesson: Starts on The Farm

Grade level: 3

Key Message: Students will understand many ag products and waste materials can be made into products we use every day.
