Organic Gardening Online Course

Did You Know: Gardening organically can help increase biodiversity in your yard and garden.

This class will teach you the essentials of organic gardening to create an ecological garden and landscape, and help you avoid common mistakes. 

Organic Gardening Class

The Organic Gardening course was created in partnership with Oregon State University Extension and the Oregon State University Department of Horticulture.

This course builds on basic gardening concepts and provides you with a better understanding of organic gardening techniques & methods and how to apply them to your own garden. You will learn how to grow productive edible gardens (veggies, berries, tree fruits), lawns and ornamental beds using 100% organic methods.

The course is divided into six modules. Each module includes several lessons with readings, videos, short quizzes, activities and a chance to personalize a Garden Journal.

  • Module 1: introduction to Organic Gardening and Ecological Landscaping
  • Module 2: Soils, Fertilizers, and Amendments
  • Module 3: Organic Pest Management
  • Module 4: Organic Vegetable Gardening
  • Module 5: Organic Berries and Fruit Trees
  • Module 6: Organic Landscape Care

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, you will:

  • Have a solid background in organic gardening techniques and terminology.
  • Understand why organic gardening is so important for the environment.
  • Choose the best organic fertilizers and amendments for the garden.
  • Identify and manage pest problems (like insects, slugs, disease, weeds, or animals) using organic methods.
  • Develop a plan to implement organic growing techniques tailored to your own unique garden.

Course Format

Because this course is online and entirely self-paced, you can move through the content at your own pace and focus on the topics that are the most useful to you. 

There is also an opportunity to develop a personalized plan with the Garden Journal activity workbook.

Brooke Edmunds

Brooke Edmunds is an associate professor (practice) in the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University. She is a community horticulturist based in Marion and Polk Counties. Her specialties are plant diseases, pest management, and problem diagnostics.

Erica Chernoh

Erica Chernoh is an assistant professor (practice) in the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University. She is a community horticulturist based in Lane County. Her specialties are tree fruits, berries, small fruits, hazelnuts, and organic agriculture.
