Relaxation Techniques

This expert-led online course offers an introduction to a variety of relaxation techniques, including breath, gentle stretching and yoga, self-massage, self-compassion practices, and mindfulness and meditation. There will be ample opportunities to interact directly with the instructor and to receive feedback and suggestions for your personal practice.

Master Advanced Relaxation Techniques

In this course, you will work closely with your instructor to:

  • Experiment with various tools and practice techniques intended to promote relaxation
  • Describe the mind-body connection and basic function of the nervous system
  • Articulate the impact of lifestyle choices on health and well-being
  • Evaluate personal enjoyment and efficacy of various practices in one's own life
  • Construct a personal relaxation practice based upon the techniques explored in class

At the end, you will have a library of tools and techniques from which you can draw when you want or need to relax. No experience is needed for this course and it is perfect for beginners looking to learn mindfulness practices.

Supplies You Will Need

For this course, you will need:

  • A yoga mat
  • A yoga bolster
  • Two inexpensive "pinky" massage balls
  • A standard size yoga block
  • A yoga strap or, alternatively, a firm blanket, belt or scarf
  • A sturdy kitchen chair or similar from around your home

If you are pregnant or have a health condition, please consult with your doctor before signing up for this course. Modifying the practices and postures is encouraged whenever needed. This course requires minimal physical activity, and the activity that is incorporated can be modified.

Instructors

Kate Gallagher

Kate has been dedicated to the study of the physical, philosophical, and meditative aspects of the practice for fifteen years. She has completed over 1,000 hours of training with hatha yoga teachers, as well as thousands of hours of ongoing Buddhist and yogic philosophical study.

Kate completed her Master's degree at OSU in Applied Religious Ethics with emphases on Buddhist/Yogic philosophies, psychology, and contemplative pedagogy. In 2018, she had the wonderful privilege to spend a year in solitary retreat to study and practice meditation full-time. She presently works for the School of Psychological Sciences at OSU as the Contemplative Studies Coordinator and Contemplative Studies Minor Advisor.

Kate is registered to teach yoga through Yoga Alliance at the 500 e-RYT level.
