Master Gardener Series: Container and Small Space Gardening

(Please note, though you will receive the same Master Gardener education that you can implement immediately, this program does not lead to a Master Gardener Certification).

This series of short courses is excerpted from OSU’s Master Gardener online course, allowing you to study specific fundamentals of gardening.

Container and Small Space Gardening Course

In the Container and Small Space Gardening course you will learn about methods and materials for gardening in containers. 

By the end of the course, you will be able to: 

  • Describe the various uses and benefits of containers in gardening. 
  • Explain how container size, material, shape and placement may impact plant growth and vigor. 
  • Evaluate the composition and structure of soilless planting mixes. 
  • Demonstrate how and when to water and fertilize container grown plants. 
  • Recognize and remedy problems that may occur with plants grown in containers. 
  • Understand how containers can be used to make gardening more accessible.

Instructors

Signe Danler
Home Horticulture Online

Signe Danler is a veteran Master Gardener and landscape designer with a Masters of Ag degree in Horticulture. In the Master Gardener Online program, she uses her experience and training in gardening, urban forestry and ecological landscaping to communicate about and promote sustainable gardening and landscaping practices.

Gail Langellotto

Gail Langellotto is a Professor of Horticulture at Oregon State University, where she also serves as the Principle Investigator of the Garden Ecology Lab and leads the statewide Oregon State University Master Gardener program. She has a M.S. and Ph.D. in entomology, and has published research on topics as diverse as the costs of starting and maintaining a vegetable garden, pollinator-friendly gardens, and the benefits of gardening to healthy eatingHer OSU Extension Service and outreach efforts are focused on communicating research-backed management practices to home gardeners. For the online Master Gardener and urban agriculture PACE courses, she supervises overall course development, and reviews and contributes to course content.
