Landscape Plant Identification IV: Conifers and Companion Broadleaf Evergreens

This is a self-paced online plant identification course covering 72, common in the horticulture industry, conifers and companion broadleaf evergreens.

You will be applying the skills you learned in Landscape Plant Identification I- Fundamentals to distinguish the differences between these plants, but also the resemblances they share for categorizing them into their respective families.

This fourth course will also build upon your use of these skills from the second and third courses. You will see and hear some familiar genera, specific epithets, and family names.

Plant ID Training Overview

Upon completion of this Plant ID course on conifers, you will be able to:

1. Identify by botanical traits 72 conifers and companion broadleaf evergreens and be cognizant of cultivars of these plants.

2. Understand how plants presented are commonly used in landscapes.

3. Be aware of general culture, pests, diseases, or other issues they may face.

Ryan Contreras

Dr. Ryan Contreras is a Professor of Horticulture at Oregon State University. He has held a research and teaching appointment at Oregon State since 2009. He is also an ornamental Plant Breeder and teaches four campus-based and Ecampus courses, including landscape plant identification I and II, growth and development of horticultural crops, and plant propagation.

Dan Blanchard

Dan Blanchard is a Graduate Research Assistant at Oregon State University. He's a graduate student with expertise in plant identification and growing knowledge of plant database and curation of living collections.
