Certificate Spotlight and Comparison

Our Learning Experience Design Certificate and E-Learning Instructional Design Certificate are related but separate.

Both are great, flexible options for career switchers. Here's a quick comparison.

  • Generally, the Learning Experience Design (LXD) Certificate program assumes participants start with an existing base of knowledge/experience regarding E-learning instructional design principles (and tools). The program takes a “deeper dive” approach to analyze and address learner experience in several different ways. 
    Certain elements involve “design thinking” methods, including multidisciplinary approaches to analyzing and addressing diverse learner needs. The program models use of some more advanced digital tools along the way. Unlike a number of other LXD programs, we utilize a foundation of cutting-edge research and practice to promote the transformation of ordinary lessons into powerful “Events” so learning is experienced and long-remembered. What also sets our LXD program apart is that we embrace principles from the learning sciences, instructional design, design thinking, and “designerly” ways of knowing and welcome the tensions between these as sources of innovation. We also focus on andragogical principles and practices, and empathy as an essential practice to promote understanding of ‘wicked problems’ to leverage the inherent complexities and beauty of human learning. And in a holistic fashion, we promote the designing of deep and memorable learning by leveraging the conative, cognitive, affective, & psychomotor domains. 

    Put simply, the Learning Experience Design program may be more appropriate for someone with significant knowledge of - or already working in - the field of instructional design/online course development.

  • The E-Learning Instructional Design Certificate, by contrast, is typically more suited for educators, designers or others preparing to transition to an instructional design role or career. This program provides foundational coverage of instructional design principles and tools. The courses tend to have a very practical, applied approach (especially) with the E-Learning Tools and Practicum courses). The foundational skills and know-how gained by learners will undoubtedly  allow them to implement effective instructional design (i.e., build online courses/interactives) using a variety of tools and platforms.

Dr. Lynne Hindman is an educator and resourceful lifelong learner who values partnerships, teamwork, and building bridges across organizations. Certified PreK-12 school principal, tenured teacher, college administrator, university instructor, researcher, and community educator. Lynne has a Masters in Educational Leadership; Specialist in Ed. Administration; and a PhD in Adult & Higher Education with a specialty in Community College Leadership.

Josh Bancroft
E-Learning Instructional Design and Development Certificate

Josh Bancroft is a lifelong geek who taught himself to type in computer programs to play games when he was 5 years old, and has been fascinated by the intersection of learning and technology ever since. Josh has a Masters degree in Adult Education and Organizational Development from Oregon State University, and works on software education and community initiatives in the Developer Relations group at Intel.

Laura Boehme, Ph.D.

Laura Boehme, Ph.D., has been teaching in higher education for more than 12 years. Dr. Boehme currently serves as the Chief Information Officer and Chief Human Resources Officer at Central Oregon Community College (COCC). She has also taught for COCC, Oregon State Ecampus, and Purdue University in areas such as business, human resources, computer information systems, ethics, adult learning theory, needs assessment, project management and e-learning design and development. She earned a Master’s in Adult Education and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership, both from Oregon State University. was born in Reno, Nevada. Her family has lived in Bend, Oregon for 20 years, enjoying the beautiful outdoors via biking, running and hiking.

Dr. Boehme is very much an advocate for "constructionist" and “self-directed” models of learning, treating learning as a process of growth, building and becoming (rather than an object to be acquired or transmitted). Her approach typically includes creating a welcoming and engaging learning environment for students to immerse in the learning content, coupled with reflection and sharing to enhance the learning experience. She provides “scaffolding” the learning to aid learners in building foundational skills and competencies, upon which other learning can then be layered as the learner is ready to move to a new level. She looks forwards to partnering with you as your guide and support in our program.

Jonan Phillip Donaldson, Ph.D.

Jonan Phillip Donaldson, Ph.D., is a learning scientist, educator, learning experience designer, and critical theorist. He earned his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Learning Technology at Drexel University. He has worked at Texas A&M University, Drexel University, Oregon State University, Western Oregon University and Chemeketa Community College. Dr. Donaldson’s specialties include constructionist learning, critical pedagogy, epistemic learning, design thinking and creativity. His current research involves the relationship between conceptualizations of learning, conceptual metaphors of learning, worldview and practices in teaching and learning.
